One of these obstacles is the proliferation of materialism in our society. The culture we live in is infected by this spirit. It has led us to worship money and possessions rather than God. It is the foundation of the ideology of consumerism, which has become a religion of sorts, undermining human dignity and turning men and women into objects for the enjoyment of others. The culture we live in teaches us to be desensitized towards death. We see death as a sacrifice, an unpleasant duty to be faced without fear and sadness: "As for those people who die before their time, do not trouble yourself about them; they are dead already." (Ecclesiastes 7:2). The Apostle Paul says that God shows us our weakness so that we can become more humble. Paul wasn't speaking about physical weakness, but rather the psychological one that makes us feel unworthy of God's mercy. Therefore, Our Lord wants to give us an opportunity to return to our original state before sin entered the world, for this is the only way to be saved. The culture we live in teaches us to be shameless towards sex. It has made vulgarity a form of entertainment and has led many people into perverted behavior. It presents sex as a commodity for sale, with no real meaning or significance outside of procreation. The Apostle Paul tells his disciple Timothy to "avoid the appeal to idols," and our Lady of La Guardia helps us to do just that by reminding us that we must not let the world draw us into its polluted waters, but rather we should remain faithful to the One Who has given us all. Despite the difficulty of such a task, there is one thing I am certain about: With the help of Our Lady, we can make this world a better place. The fourth commandment of God is for parents and children: "Honor your father and mother." (Ephesians 6:2) This is how God shows His mercy towards mankind. This is not a simple commandment. It is a divine law that concerns the entire person, affecting each and every phase of life, from infancy to old age. The commandment is found in the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes given to us by Jesus: "He who lives and believes in me shall never die." (John 11:26) It is very important for parents to realize they are children of God, because only they can define what it means to be good; even more so, they can reveal how He expects them to treat their children. eccc085e13
